Nestled amidst the breathtaking Gharwal Himalayas, the Har ki Dun trek beckons adventure seekers and nature lovers alike. The Har ki Dun trekking trail is adorned with serene deodar trees, infusing the air with the scent of pine. Each step taken on this captivating journey is an invitation to immerse oneself in the wonders of nature’s bounty.
Commencing from the picturesque Sankri village, here are some quick facts about the Har Ki Dun Trek:
Reaching Dehradun, the gateway to the Kedarkantha Trek, is convenient through various modes of transportation:
Embark on a picturesque 200 km journey from Dehradun to Sankri (~1900 m, 6230 ft), passing through Mussorie, Yamuna Pool, Purola, Mori, and Netwar. Notable for its scenic beauty, the road offers glimpses of turquoise Yamuna river, blue pine forests, and the meandering Tons river. After Netwar, obtain permits at the Govind Vanya Jibh Vihar check post. Sankri, with sporadic BSNL network, provides lodging options and basic eateries.
Commence the day early with a 1-hour drive from Sankri to Taluka. The trek begins here, following the Tamosa river with occasional snow patches. The route passes through villages like Datmir, Gangar, Powani, and Osla. After crossing a side stream and a bridge, continue toward Seema (~2500 m, 8200 ft), a trek of 14 km taking 6/7 hours. Seema offers accommodation options, including GMVN TRH and a Forest Rest House. The village of Osla is located on the other side of the river, approximately ~215 m/700 ft above the river bed.
Commence the morning trek at Seema, cross the suspension bridge, and follow the stoned trail upstream. Pass through vast green expanses farmed by Osla villagers. Enjoy breathtaking views of Banderpunch, Swargarohini, and Black Peak. Ascend to Kalkatti Dhar, witness the convergence of Har Ki Dun and Ruinsara Nallahs, and descend through a sun-shaded forest to reach Seema (~2500 m, 8200 ft). Encounter birdlife, langurs, and blue sheep. The camping ground is near the river, with accommodation options at GMVN TRH and Forest Rest House. Total distance: 11 km, 5/6 hours.
Witness the sunrise on Swargarohini peaks. Explore Har Ki Dun peak, Swargarohini, and Hata peak. Choose between exploring Jaundar Glacier or Maninda Tal area. Jaundar Glacier, 8 km away, involves challenging terrain and requires camping. Alternatively, Maninda Tal is a 2-hour walk and offers scenic views. Return to Har Ki Dun by lunchtime. Enjoy the mesmerizing sunset over Har Ki Dun Nallah and peak. Collect firewood responsibly for the night. Nights are cold, and temperatures can drop to -10°C in winter. Night stay in a tent.
After breakfast, commence the return journey towards Seema. Descend gently downstream to the frozen waterfall, then climb up to Kalkatti Dhar and gradually descend to the vast crop fields. Approach Seema bridge and head towards the charming village of Osla. Explore the wooden houses and visit the ancient temple dedicated to Duryodhan. Spend time interacting with locals, understanding their customs, culture, and social structure. Afterward, descend to Seema for the night. Night accommodation in a tent.
